What is PRTG?

PRTG, from Paessler GmbH in Nuremberg, is one of the most widely deployed monitoring platforms in the world. Its model is the sensor: one sensor watches one value — a switch port's traffic, a CPU, a certificate expiry — and PRTG ships more than 250 pre-configured sensor types plus custom script sensors, licensed by sensor count. Discovery scans your ranges and creates suitable sensors automatically; remote probes distribute collection across sites; NetFlow, IPFIX, sFlow, and jFlow cover bandwidth analysis. It runs genuinely on-prem — your data on your servers — with a Paessler-hosted option, and its AI features are statistical: anomaly detection, adaptive baselines, and sensor recommendations, included for all users.

An automated topology-and-config-backup layer exists as the PRTG UVexplorer add-on. What PRTG deliberately isn't is a remote-access or investigation tool — SSH, in PRTG, is how it logs in to collect metrics, not a terminal for you.

What is Transit?

Transit is an investigation-only network AI assistant built into a professional SSH and serial terminal. You connect to your switches, routers, and firewalls the way you always have — the AI investigates alongside you. It reads the same scrollback you see, proposes read-only diagnostic commands, and explains what it finds. It can investigate your network; it can't change your gear.

Investigation-only is architecture, not a promise. The AI has exactly four abilities — list open sessions, read redacted scrollback, propose a command, ask you a question — and every command it proposes must pass a per-vendor permit list and your explicit click before it runs. Always both, never either. Device output is redacted before any model sees it, and the AI has no code path to your credentials. Transit AI Software Inc. completed a SOC 2 Type I examination in July 2026, and the safety architecture is patent pending.

Transit is not a monitoring platform, and doesn't want to be: it will never page you, and it doesn't poll your network. It starts where the alert ends — a technician in a terminal, working out why. The terminal is a free download; the investigation-only AI is the subscription.

Does PRTG have AI?

PRTG markets AI-powered anomaly detection, adaptive baselines, and smart sensor recommendations — statistical features included for all users. As of July 2026 Paessler does not advertise an AI assistant or AI-driven investigation for PRTG. Transit covers exactly that other half: an AI in the live session that proposes read-only diagnostics, gated by a per-vendor permit list and your click.
